Used Audi automatic gearbox: finding the right one with the three-letter code
An A4, an A5 and a Q5 from the same year may share an automatic gearbox… or not at all. At Audi, as throughout the Volkswagen group, it is neither the model nor the engine size that tells you which gearbox fits: it is a three-letter code, assigned to each gearbox + engine + drivetrain combination.
Why the gearbox code matters more than the model
A single gearbox family (dual-clutch S tronic, torque-converter Tiptronic, quattro or front-wheel drive) comes in dozens of variants. They differ in gear ratios, torque capacity, final drive, the bell housing matched to the engine and the control unit software. Two casings that look exactly alike can therefore carry different codes and not be interchangeable.
Where to read your gearbox code
On the vehicle data sticker: the label stuck in the boot (often under the floor, near the spare wheel) or in the service book. The gearbox code appears next to the engine code.
On the gearbox casing: three letters stamped or printed on a label, often near the clutch bell housing or on top of the casing.
On the invoice or garage documents, if the gearbox has already been replaced or repaired.
At our dismantlers, the code is also written in marker on the casing as soon as it is removed: that is what you see in the photos on our product pages, for example NUK, NHM or UEL.
What to give us for an error-free order
The three-letter gearbox code (the most important);
The engine code, also three or four letters;
The chassis number (VIN) — we check the match before shipping;
Front-wheel drive or quattro, if you cannot find the code.
If the code of the used gearbox differs from yours, there is sometimes an equivalence (same gearbox, code changed during production). We prefer to confirm it with you rather than assert it: a mismatched automatic gearbox may refuse to initialise.
An inspected used unit rather than a repair
Repairing an S tronic mechatronic unit or clutches quickly costs more than a complete used gearbox. Our gearboxes are removed from identified vehicles, photographed from several angles with their code, and guaranteed.
