Used Renault JR5 gearbox: Clio, Captur, Mégane and Dacia

If your Renault or Dacia has a five-speed manual gearbox, there is a good chance it is a JR5. This Renault-Nissan alliance gearbox has been fitted for years to a large part of the range, in both petrol and diesel versions, notably behind the 1.5 dCi.

The models concerned

  • Renault Clio III and Clio IV;

  • Renault Captur;

  • Renault Mégane and Scénic (depending on the engine);

  • Dacia Sandero, Logan and Duster (5-speed versions);

  • Some Nissan models from the alliance.

This list is not enough to order: the same car can be fitted with several different JR5 gearboxes depending on the engine and the year.

JR5 332, JR5 358…: read the full reference

“JR5” designates the family. The three digits that follow identify the version: gear ratios, final drive ratio, adaptation to the engine. A petrol JR5 and a diesel JR5 are not interchangeable, even if they look alike.

  • On the casing: a plate or a label carries the full reference (JR5 followed by three digits), often on top of the gearbox, near the gear selector.

  • On the dismantler's marking: on our product pages, the reference is written in marker and photographed, as on our gearbox JR5 358.

  • Failing that, the chassis number (VIN) allows us to find the gearbox fitted at the factory.

The signs that call for a replacement

  • Crunching when changing gear despite a clutch in good condition;

  • Whining that increases with speed (bearings);

  • Gear jumping out, especially in 5th or reverse;

  • Oil leak at the differential outputs.

When the bearings or the differential are affected, an inspected used gearbox generally costs less than a rebuild. Take advantage of the replacement to change the clutch kit and the release bearing.

Ordering the right JR5

Give us the full reference read on your gearbox, or your VIN: we check the match before shipping. The stock is on the page Renault gearboxes. For a 1.5 dCi engine, our article on the K9K engine completes this guide.
