Used Mercedes automatic gearbox: 722.6 (5G-Tronic) or 722.9 (7G-Tronic)?
At Mercedes, the automatic gearbox, like the engine, carries a six-digit reference. It always starts with 722, followed by a digit giving the family, then two digits giving the exact version. The two families you come across most often on the used market are the 722.6, with five gears, and the 722.9, the seven-speed 7G-Tronic.
722.6: the five-speed 5G-Tronic
Introduced in the late 1990s, the 722.6 was fitted to a very large number of Mercedes, petrol and diesel alike, and stayed in the range for a long time on vans and the most powerful models. Examples in stock: 722.626 for 3.2 CDI, 722.662 from the ML W163 3.2 V6, 722.683 from the Vito W639 3.0 CDI.
722.9: the 7G-Tronic
Launched in 2003, the 7G-Tronic gradually replaced the 722.6 on most models, from the C and E-Class to the AMG V8s, as well as on the ML, GLK, R-Class and Vito. Examples in stock: 722.901 from the E-Class W211 2.2, 722.902 from the ML W164 3.0 CDI, 722.906 from the R-Class, 722.962 from the GLK 4MATIC, 722.996 from the C W204 2.2 CDI, 722.931 from the AMG 5.5 V8.
The last two digits make the difference
The engine — the bell housing and the torque converter are specific to each engine family. A 722.9 from a 2.2 CDI cannot be fitted behind a V8.
The drivetrain — 4MATIC versions have an output to the transfer case, rear-wheel-drive versions do not.
The torque — AMG models and large diesels get reinforced versions.
The electronics — on the 722.9, the control module is housed inside the gearbox and must match the vehicle; it may need coding after fitting.
Where to read the reference
The 722.xxx reference is on a riveted plate or a sticker on the gearbox casing, usually on the side. If it is unreadable, the chassis number (VIN) can be used to find it. Give us one or the other: we check that it matches before shipping.
