Land Rover and Jaguar V6 diesel used engine: TDV6 2.7 (276DT) or 3.0 (306DT)?

Since 2004, Land Rover and Jaguar six-cylinder diesels have relied on two engines: the 2.7 TDV6 and the 3.0 TDV6 / SDV6. They were developed with PSA and Ford, and their family can be found under the bonnet of some high-end Peugeot and Citroën models. They look alike and sometimes carry the same badge, but they do not replace each other. The engine code settles it: 276DT for the 2.7, 306DT for the 3.0.

The 2.7 TDV6 — code 276DT

Fitted from 2004 to around 2010, about 190 hp:

  • Land Rover Discovery 3 and early Discovery 4

  • Range Rover Sport L320 first phase

  • Jaguar S-Type, XF and XJ 2.7 D

Single-turbo engine, known for its torque, but it forgives poor maintenance badly: long oil change intervals and unsuitable oil wear out the crankshaft and its bearings.

The 3.0 TDV6 and SDV6 — code 306DT

It replaced the 2.7 from 2009-2010 and still powers many recent models, from 211 to over 300 hp depending on the version (single or twin turbo):

  • Land Rover Discovery 4 and Discovery 5

  • Range Rover Sport L320 phase 2 and L494, Range Rover L405, Velar

  • Jaguar XF, XJ and F-Pace 3.0 D

The code is often followed by a letter — 306DTA, 306DTB, 306DTC… — which tracks the engine's evolution: power, emissions standards (Euro 5, Euro 6), electronics. For a trouble-free replacement, we look for the same suffix. Failing that, we check compatibility with you before shipping.

How to tell which one is under your bonnet

  • The engine capacity on the registration document (box P.1): about 2,720 cm³ for the 2.7, 2,993 cm³ for the 3.0.

  • The code on the block : 276DT or 306DT, stamped on the crankcase.

  • The chassis number (VIN) : send it to us, and we will identify the engine and its variant.

What to check when replacing

  • The cause of the failure : on these V6s, a crankshaft or bearing failure often comes from a lubrication problem. Check the oil pump, the oil cooler and the strainer before fitting the replacement engine.

  • Turbos : on twin-turbo versions, check the condition of the oil lines and the intercooler. Debris from the old engine can damage a new turbo.

  • Gearbox : ZF 6HP26 behind the 2.7, ZF 6HP or 8HP behind the 3.0 depending on the year. We also offer these gearboxes used.

A used V6 rather than a standard exchange

For a Discovery or a Range Rover Sport more than ten years old, a new engine or a standard exchange often costs more than the vehicle is worth. A checked used engine, with the right code and delivered complete, is the most sensible solution. All our listings show the reference read on the photographed part.
