Used Ford EcoBoost Engine: 1.0, 1.5, 1.6 or 2.0 — How to Find the Right Code

Since 2010, almost every Ford petrol car sold in Europe has carried the EcoBoost. This name refers to a family of turbocharged direct-injection engines, from the small 1.0-litre three-cylinder up to the V6 of American pick-ups. When you look for a used engine, it is a classic trap: “1.0 EcoBoost” is not enough to order the right part. What matters is the engine code, four characters that change with power, generation and model.

The main EcoBoost families

  • 1.0 EcoBoost (three cylinders) — the most widespread: Fiesta, Focus, EcoSport, B-Max, C-Max, Puma, Transit Connect and Courier, from 100 to 140 hp. Codes found in our catalogue: SFJA, M1JE, M1DA, M1JU, YYJB, B7DA, B7JB…

  • 1.5 EcoBoost — Focus III, Kuga II, Mondeo V, from 120 to 182 hp (M8MA, M9DA, UNCA, BNMA…), and the 200 hp three-cylinder of the Fiesta ST Mk8 (YZJA).

  • 1.6 EcoBoost — the previous generation of the four-cylinder: Focus III, C-Max, Kuga II, Mondeo IV, Fiesta ST Mk7 (JQMA, JTJA, JTDB, YUDA…).

  • 2.0 and 2.3 EcoBoost — Mondeo, Galaxy, S-Max, Focus ST and RS, Mustang (TNWA, R9DA, YVDA…).

At the same displacement, two codes can hide different outputs, engine control units and accessories. A 125 hp Focus III 1.0 (M1DA) and a 100 hp Fiesta VI 1.0 (SFJA) share the same base block, but not necessarily the same engine management or wiring harness.

Where to read the engine code on your Ford

  • On the engine itself : the code is stamped or labelled on the block, on the gearbox side, or on a label on the timing cover.

  • On the vehicle papers : the maintenance invoice or your Ford garage's record often shows it, based on the serial number (VIN).

  • By sending us the VIN : with the serial number from the registration document (box E), we find the exact code before suggesting a part.

On all our listings, the reference is taken from the photographed part and appears in the title: you compare four characters, not a description.

Points to know before you buy

  • The “wet” timing belt of the 1.0 : on the three-cylinder 1.0, the timing belt runs in oil. It tolerates poor oil or stretched oil-change intervals badly. When refitting a used engine, an oil change with oil meeting the Ford specification is essential.

  • The cooling circuit : small EcoBoost engines cope badly with overheating. If your original engine failed after a coolant leak, have the hoses, expansion tank and water pump checked before fitting the new one, or the same cause will produce the same effect.

  • Mild-hybrid versions : since 2020, some 1.0 engines (Puma, Focus IV, Fiesta Mk8) have a 48 V belt starter-generator. The codes change (B7DA, B7JB…): a standard 1.0 cannot simply be fitted in its place without adaptation.

  • The matching gearbox : we also supply EcoBoost manual and automatic gearboxes. Check its reference at the same time as the engine's.

Why a used EcoBoost is a good deal

A new Ford engine often costs more than the residual value of a ten-year-old Fiesta or Focus. A checked used engine, with the right code, puts the car back on the road for a fraction of the price. Our engines are delivered complete, with their accessories fitted when the listing says so, and are guaranteed.
