Used Aisin TF-80SC gearbox: one gearbox for Opel, Volvo, Ford and Peugeot

If you are looking for a six-speed automatic gearbox for an Opel Insignia, a Volvo V70, a Ford Mondeo, a Peugeot 407 or a Fiat Croma, chances are it is the same one: the Aisin AW TF-80SC. Designed in Japan, it was adopted by almost every European manufacturer from 2005 onwards — each one renaming it in its own way.

One gearbox, six trade names

  • Opel calls it AF40 (and AF40-6 on transverse versions).

  • Volvo calls it TF-80SC, sometimes coded AW6A-EL.

  • Ford and Mazda use AWTF-80 SC or 6F21.

  • Peugeot, Citroën, Fiat and Lancia use the designation (AM6 or “Aisin 6-speed automatic gearbox”).

The mechanical unit is the same. What changes is the bell housing adapted to the engine, the gear ratios, the control unit and the wiring harness. That is precisely why a Volvo TF-80SC cannot be fitted as-is to an Insignia, even though both labels say “TF-80SC”.

The Aisin AW plate: the only thing to look at

A small gold or silver metal plate is riveted to the casing. It always carries four lines:

  • “AISIN AW CO., LTD.” and “MADE IN JAPAN” — the header, which confirms the manufacturer;

  • the model — TF-80SC, TF-81SC, TG-81SC depending on the generation;

  • the manufacturer reference, often followed by a version letter — for example 55561550 A at Opel, or a seven-digit number starting with 12 at Volvo;

  • the serial number such as 08K38-6235, which dates the production.

It is the manufacturer reference that counts. The version letter that follows it is not decorative: it distinguishes different gear ratios on an identical casing.

TF-80SC, TF-81SC, TG-81SC: do not confuse them

Three generations followed one another and look very much alike:

  • TF-80SC — the original six-speed, from around 2005 to 2014, up to 400 Nm.

  • TF-81SC — a variant for more powerful transverse engines, also six-speed.

  • TG-81SC — the eight-speed that succeeded it, notably at Volvo from 2014. It is in no way interchangeable with the previous ones despite the similar name.

One letter of difference, a completely different gearbox: this is the textbook case of the truncated code. “TF-80” or “Aisin 6-speed” is never enough to order.

Points to watch when buying

  • Note the full reference on your plate before ordering, including the version letter.

  • Check the orientation: longitudinal versions (rear-wheel-drive Volvo, Ford) and transverse versions (Opel, PSA) do not share the same casing.

  • The TF-80SC is known to be sensitive to oil maintenance. An oil change at fitting, with the filter, is a tiny investment compared with the cost of a rebuild.

  • Have the adaptation values reset after fitting: without this, gear changes remain harsh for several hundred kilometres.

Each of our Aisin gearboxes is photographed with its plate, and the reference we publish is the one we read on it — never one from a catalogue. If in doubt, send us a photo of yours.
