Used Mercedes OM651 engine: the 2.2 CDI, its versions and how to read its reference
Sold under the name 2.2 CDI, the Mercedes-OM651 is the four-cylinder diesel that the brand fitted to a large part of its range from 2008 onwards. You will find it in a C-Class just as well as in a Sprinter, which makes it one of the most sought-after used engines. But behind this same name lie many variants that are not blindly interchangeable.
One engine, many vehicles
Despite the “2.2 CDI” badge on the tailgate, the OM651 displaces just over 2.1 litres. Depending on the vehicle and the generation, its power ranges from the economical van version up to the twin-turbo versions of the saloons. It can be found under the bonnet of:
Mercedes C-Class W204 and W205 and E-Class W212
Mercedes Sprinter 906 and 907 and Vito / Viano
Mercedes GLK and other SUVs from the brand
Some models from Jeep, such as the Compass 2.2 CRD, which inherited it
The 651.9xx reference: that is what counts
Every OM651 carries a six-digit number in the form 651.9xx stamped on the block. The last three digits designate the exact version: power output, fuel system, emissions standard and position of the engine in the vehicle. A Sprinter 651.955 and a C-Class 651.913 share the same base, but not necessarily the same ancillaries, the same wiring harness or the same engine management.

What to watch on an OM651
The injectors — the first versions were fitted with piezo injectors, which were replaced by a different system on later generations. Check which type your vehicle has before reusing yours.
The timing chain — it is located on the gearbox side. Replacing it takes a lot of labour, hence the value of an engine with a known history.
The particulate filter and the EGR valve on Euro 5 and Euro 6 versions: exclusively urban use clogs them up faster.
