Used Renault 1.9, 2.0, 2.2 or 2.3 dCi engine: F9Q, M9R, G9T or M9T?

At Renault, the “dCi” badge covers several very different diesel engines. A Trafic can have a 1.9, 2.0 or 2.5 dCi depending on the year; a Master a 2.2, 2.5 or 2.3 dCi. And the same engines are fitted to Opel, Nissan and even Suzuki models. To order the right used engine, you need to start from the engine code — three characters for the family, then digits for the version.

F9Q: the 1.9 dCi

A 1.9-litre four-cylinder with a timing belt, introduced at the end of the 1990s. It is found in the Mégane, Scénic and Laguna, the Trafic II and its twin (Opel Vivaro), as well as in the Suzuki Grand Vitara II 1.9 DDiS. Examples in stock: F9Q760 from a Trafic II, F9Q872 from a Mégane III.

G9T: the 2.2 dCi

The belt-driven 2.2 dCi powers the Laguna II, the Espace III and IV, the Vel Satis and the Master II (as well as the Opel Movano A). In passenger cars it was replaced by the M9R. Examples: G9T722, G9T742 from an Espace IV.

M9R: the 2.0 dCi

Developed with Nissan and launched in 2005, the 2.0 dCi has a timing chain. It is the engine of the Laguna III, Espace IV (later models), Koleos, Trafic II and III, the Opel Vivaro and the Nissan X-Trail and Qashqai 2.0 dCi. It comes in many versions, from about 90 to 180 hp. Examples: M9R782 from a Trafic II, M9R717 from a Trafic III 150 hp, M9RA868 from a Koleos II.

M9T: the 2.3 dCi

Launched in 2010 with the Master III, the 2.3 dCi is also fitted to the Opel Movano B, the Nissan NV400 and the Nissan Navara NP300 (where Nissan calls it YS23). It comes in single-turbo and twin-turbo versions, from about 100 to 170 hp depending on the version. Examples: M9T706 from a Master, M9T880 from a Master III, M9T270 from a Navara.

The three digits make the difference

  • The version — M9R 782 and M9R 833 are both 2.0 dCi engines, but one comes from a Trafic and the other from an X-Trail 4x4. Mounts, sump, turbo and ancillaries can differ.

  • The power output — for the same family code, the power depends on the version. Always give it, together with the year.

  • Emissions equipment — Euro 6 versions (AdBlue, newer particulate filter) cannot be fitted to an older vehicle without adaptation.

  • Where to read the code — stamped on the block or on a riveted plate, usually on the gearbox side. If in doubt, the chassis number (VIN) settles it.
